Schools to organise new opportunities aimed at getting more young people involved in weekly sport
through the Sport England Satellite Club programme. What is a Satellite Club?
Satellite clubs are extensions of existing community sports clubs (hub clubs) built around the
participants’ needs and have an emphasis on friendship and social experience. They provide access
to sport on young peoples’ terms and seek to offer a different sporting experience as a way of
making sport more appealing in order to attract and retain involvement. Who do Satellite clubs cater for?
Satellite Clubs aim to attract people aged between 11 and 25 years old with an interest in getting
involved in social sport but who are put off by more formal and competitive club structures.
Satellite clubs are totally inclusive and create an opportunity for people from all backgrounds to play
sport in a relaxed and friendly environment. Key Features of a Satellite Club
• Focused on fun and social sport or activity
• Easily accessible for the local community
• Ideally located on Secondary School sites after 6.00 pm or at weekends
• Actively encourage participants to share their ideas on how to make sport more engaging to
help shape the satellite club
• Run or led by leaders and coaches linking back to the hub club or NGB
